Patrick Bateman is a parody of an alpha. On the outside he has most of the right characteristics, but his inner life reveals that it's all fake. Aside from his feminine obsessiveness with his own appearance, the most obvious tell that he is not alpha is that he has no desire to lead or care for others beneath him. He only wants the social benefits that come with high status. Bateman has the mind of a gamma.

Vito Corleone from The Godfather is a classic example. Real alphas lead other men, and are loyal to those beneath them in the hierarchy who support them. Being an alpha entails a tremendous amount of responsibility which is why it is associated with high status. Patrick Bateman on the other hand has no real responsibility at all to speak of. He got his job at Pierce & Pierce because of his wealthy family, and he spends the entire novel avoiding all responsibilities and chasing admiration from other people who he considers to be beneath him. That's what gammas do. They see themselves as "secret kings," where they are better than everyone else around them even though no one acknowledges it.
