Brainwashing means something a little more specific than "mind control", manipulation, or any of the other typical variants we're used to.

One's mind can be split in to alters, or alternate personalities. These alters can be quite malleable, especially depending on the person. From here, we can extrapolate a bit - brainwashing is creating a new alter, one isolated form the rest and lacking an ability to understand or even perceive the other alters. This wipes the newly fragmented memory's personality, so to speak, resulting in the target's relation to a new born baby with no understanding of its past nor an ability to comprehend more complex ideas typically developed in a tempered and structured mind with more maturity developed.
