If I were less apathetic, I'd suggest folks find a meaningful goal and then achieve it. It's amazing to see the difference in people once they've started actually achieving goals and working towards goals.

Being hopeless has to be terrifying and a horrible way to live.

But dont you have to get to that hopelessness once in a mans life to actual become a man? Isn't that adversity what makes men strong? I think boys/men hit a breaking point at some point in their life and it is at that very point that a boy becomes a man, or a man becomes broken.

I don't think so, no. Kinda like you don't need to be kicked in the nuts to be a man.

Overcoming adversity isn't what makes a man. Doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching, is what makes a man. Overcoming adversity may be a part of that.
