Not that they didn't have the chance. Kevin Spacey kept getting turned down after pitching it, which is why it ended up on Netflix.
By the way, I highly recommend watching the original British version of it, it's just as good as the US version, though it's a bit dated (for example, lots of violent IRA stuff). There are a lot of parallels with the first two US seasons, but it diverges a lot after that, though I have a feeling that the ending to the US version will end up being the same as the UK version.

I'm actually from Scotland originally and lived in Ireland during some of The Troubles. Great show. Have you sen Harry's Game? Brutal stuff! And also To Play The King which was the sequel to House of Cards.

So is Orange is the New Black. It's what happens on the rare occasion that creativity trumps money.
Unfortunately that's only for the short-term. Original series production with regular main characters gets expensive after awhile. Hopefully Hastings can keep it on the boil without radically raising prices or risking a shareholder revolt.
