Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live -- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

I've got a friend who works at a call center that isn't owned by Google but handles outsourced tech support for Google's Nest line of products. He said that there are certain "features" in the product that no one in the company is allowed to provide support for or interact with. Anything involving those "features" requires authorization from a Google executive. Hmm...
He was offered free Nest products for his home, but he turned them down.

I had a discussion about this with another user about a couple weeks ago, see here: https://voat.co/v/whatever/3017388/16595679/10#16595679
To bad the discussion devolved because the other party was an ass-hat.
Back on topic... It is very possible/likely that any and every electronic which was not made by yourself has a microphone installed by some foreign or domestic entity with the intent of spying on us. See this article from all the way back in 2005: https://newatlas.com/go/4604/
If they were that small back then, they could be near invisible by now if not fully integrated into PCB in order to reduce the threat of detection.
The quote from 1894 by George Orwell posted by /u/TH0UGHTP0LICE above is more relevant now more than ever, we live in scary times.

It isn't just the actual device to worry about either. Even if the microphone is there for a legitimate reason and welcomed by the user (such as on a smart phone) and the company itself is not abusing it, it is easy for a 3rd party app to hijack it. Something as benign as a news or weather app can be sending your data back to some agency or a foreign entity w/o your knowledge.
It is even beyond that: I went to buy an adapter the other day that will allow you to project your iPhone onto a TV with HDMI (yes I know about Bluetooth, but I refused to buy a smart TV because of concerns of "spying" etc.), and there was a much cheaper version of it from a Chinese company, but it required you to "just check the box that this is a trusted device". WTF?

2019-02-19 | Google says Nest microphone was 'never supposed to be a secret' - Business Insider
"The problem: Nest users didn't know a microphone even existed on their security device to begin with."
'In early February, Google announced that its home security and alarm system Nest Secure would be getting an update — users could now enable its virtual assistant technology, Google Assistant. '
'Google bought Nest — which was initially known for its smart thermostat device — back in 2014 for $3.2 billion. '
'On Tuesday, a Google spokesperson told Business Insider the company had made an "error."'
'The existence of a microphone on the Nest Guard (which is the alarm, keypad, and motion sensor component in the Nest Secure offering) was never disclosed in any of the product material for the device. '

For the CIA, Google was an investment in the future of the US. The above is obviously a simple oversight; I don't know what the fuss is about. There is no coincidence here.

"Anyone with an electrical engineering degree who decided to take the unit apart could have found it. It wasn't a secret"

Doesn't take a degree to take something apart and figure out what the basic pieces are.
