There's public transport which in some places is subsidized. There's also bikes.
The democrats have been propping up the insurance companies for a very long time now. It would be impossible to get them to agree to eliminate the insurers even if it meant they could increase government by ten fold. A government takeover of insurance companies would also be the first plank in the socialist agenda, which we do not want. How about some common sense tort reform, medical product profit margin regulations, Doctor and hospital billing regulations, and better insurance company / hospital oversight. These measures would include pricing models that allow for a profit margin that should not exceed 15% across the supply chain. I guarantee it will lower healthcare costs to a reasonable amount for every individual regardless of their medical history.
