If only when I used to be bullied I had my current level of maturity and intelligence, I would know how to properly deal with the bullies.

I went to school with a kid that had been picked on for years. The teachers allowed it to play out. One day he had enough. He went home and got a gun and killed the bully.
They put him in a mental lockup for a few years. They let him out, although he's sedated now.

If you've never read "Danegeld" by Rudyard Kipling, it covers exactly this
"It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation To call upon a neighbour and to say: -- "We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight, Unless you pay us cash to go away."
And that is called asking for Dane-geld, And the people who ask it explain That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld And then you'll get rid of the Dane!
It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation, To puff and look important and to say: -- "Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you. We will therefore pay you cash to go away."
And that is called paying the Dane-geld; But we've proved it again and again, That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld You never get rid of the Dane.
It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation, For fear they should succumb and go astray; So when you are requested to pay up or be molested, You will find it better policy to say: --
"We never pay any-one Dane-geld, No matter how trifling the cost; For the end of that game is oppression and shame, And the nation that pays it is lost!"

Thanks for this recommendation! I will read the book.
Rudyard Kipling is the 37th most popular author on Project Gutenberg in the past 30 days, and I noticed he's not required reading!

Bullies are bloody cowards! They will only attack those they deemed weak. THe best tactic is not to come onto their ground. If you can't avoid it in the school yard, better get friendly with a good natured big tough guy, and when the game start, your friend comes in and beat up the bully. Other solution is to comply, to give him your lunch and a drink laced with something that will make him shit himself liquid in a split second in front of everyone present. That will socially kill his bully career in a split shit second. Laxative may be the answer, Hahahahaha! SHame is lethal!

Nobody wants to fight someone who's willing to fight back.

I dunno. I've never been violent or had any issues with bullies. I just play "the better man" as dickishly as possible until even their buddies are turning against the bully. (Usually with laughter.)
I even went through a "poke the bear" phase as a kid. Still never got a bully to punch me because he didn't have the crowd behind him.
There is strength in being the better man. Just don't be a nice guy about it.

You have to know when to hold and know when to fold. Today's crop of bullied are political bullies and when they are in a group, your life is in danger. There is no requirement for being a passive dummy in these situations.
