What advances could have happened in our "understanding" of the C language? Or, perhaps more to your point, what advantages do other languages have over C? Efficiency and tidyness of the source code? Efficiency of the compiled program? Functions that are completely impossible on C?
I think an even better analogy still is comparing it to mathematics, which has not changed in syntax in centuries.

No it's from our understanding of CS, not just C. C was designed in a whole different era of computing where people literally interfaced with computers with supped up typewriters.
Well mathematicians have had a lot longer period of time for it to stabilize. CS is a brand new field and even more so when C was created.
