They were cooked, some burned Alive, the pipeline explosion kills 73, Tlahuelilpan, population 20,000, is just 8 miles (13 kilometres ) from Pemex's Tula refinery. Pemex Chief Executive Octavio Romero said an estimated 10,000 barrels of premium gasoline were rushing through the pipeline with 20 kilograms of pressure when it was ruptured.

This is what is going to happen to the entire infrastructure of the Western world in a few decades. It's already happened in Third World countries. Water is stolen, electricity is stolen, gasoline is stolen, heating oil is stolen, copper wires are ripped out of buildings or torn down from poles to sell for scrap, batteries are stolen, the very paving stones are torn up from the ground. Nothing created for the general good survives. Today it's Mexico, tomorrow it's the United States.

How poor do you have to be that dousing yourself in gasoline becomes a good idea?

They ground their country's transportation grid to a halt and burned each other to death to steal about 10 dollars apiece in gasoline. There's no way you could carry enough fuel in the buckets they were using to make this worthwhile. Everyone loves free gas, but if it has a bunch of dirt and twigs in it, I hardly see the point.

There were trees all around them. Gasoline is neither needed nor practical to cook dinner with. No matter how poor you are, there are always better options. Certainly better options than breaching a high pressure pipeline to steal gasoline (which evaporates extremely quickly) with buckets.
You make it sound like they were innocent victims of circumstance. Their deaths were as self-inflicted as their poverty, and both symptoms of the same disease: Terminal Stupidity.

Agreed, hunger is the greatest motivator.
But maybe instead of taping into a pipline and burn to a crisp, steal your gas from the gas station or a car, whatever happens to you when you get caught can't be worse than being burned alive.
