We still have another dog, who is actually older than the one that just died. I still live at home, and my parents won’t be getting another dog. I certainly plan on getting one, but not while I am still home.

Your a great person. I think allowing a pet to live so you'll have that pet by your side longer is selfish. Hell allowing it to die and have no more pain is not an easy thing to do but it is the right thing to do. I hope if I'm unable and I am in enough pain to want to die someone will have your fortitude to help me in that time. You need time to heal now because you just had a lot of good memories by seeing your friend no more not return daily but it's now time to think of the best times together like when your on your back and your face is getting a tongue bath and you can't stop giggling and squirming. Now this is the time to remember that stuff and if there is an afterlife your dog is watching and happy you are happy thinking about him.
