When buying things for my house I always ask myself if it would look good in my Grandmother's house. (Or whatever woman you look up to) I try to pick things with a certain style, but not too specifically themed (ie plants, but not any one specific plant say, roses or whatever) if you get too specific, it kinda looks overwhelming.
If you are planning for a future, you could add some nursery-ish stuff that you can still use now. Such as a good quality rocking chair, or a hot/cold humidifier.
Bathroom towels are a good all around item too.

I really like your gift $ pricing. I always wonder if I’m on target. I try and do $100 and then the bridal shower gift too. What are bridal shower gift rules of thumb?

This is a pretty good write up on essentials and non-essentials. Also, congratulations!
