Unless your government removes itself from the convention on narcotics you can't just freely grow it yourself or even set plant limits as the cultivation all depends on your needs, the available space, security, etc. It's impossible for home growers to fully comply so it will be taken over completely by the government who will produce shit quality products with high prices and they'll continue the war against everyone who goes outside of their system just like they do now. Decriminalizing it on the other hand makes it a free for all and allows your nation to still stay part to the convention on narcotics which avoids potential sanctions by claiming ignorance of any black market in your country due to there not being any laws on the books that should create one and that you consider drug use a personal issue that at worst needs to be dealt with medically.

I think this needs to be addressed on a drug by drug basis. I think it is silly that weed and shrooms are illegal. Marijuana is medicinal and no real harm seems to come of the two. However, I don't think things would go over well if there were private companies peddling heroin, or meth. Cigarettes get enough flak for killing their customers, I could not imagine what a cocaine peddler would feel. Those drugs are also really harmful to people, there would be no logic to allow them while banning things like transfats.

Decriminalization has worked for other countries and when implemented, drug usage actually goes down. People are treated as if they are ill when caught instead of being thrown in jail were they can basically network with other criminals.

Yes. Prohibition of drugs does nothing to combat addiction it only perpetuates violence and gives all the money to the most vicious criminals out there.

Yes... but if you commit a crime while on drugs, no favors.

Absolutely, but we should also provide rehab programs for those seeking help as well.

Correct, if we take all of the money associated with trying to fight the War on Drugs and spend it on education and rehab I think we'd be much better off.

Exactly and I pulled this from an article

In 2001, Portugal became the first country in the world to end the drug war within its borders, and in the short time since, the country has seen a radical improvement in their society. In regards to drugs, they actually now have less of a negative impact on society in Portugal than they did prior to the end of prohibition. There are now fewer drug-related deaths, fewer children getting ahold of drugs, and fewer people doing drugs in general.

There are also many other factors that people many times overlook, including the fact that infectious diseases spread through needles and dirty drug practices have declined rapidly in Portugal since the end of drug prohibition. The police state is also not nearly as much of a problem for residents as it once was. Many prisons have even shut down because there is not enough crime.

GASP! Who would've thought decriminalizing drugs leads to less people doing them and less people in prison?!

I'm pro drug legalization. It's your life. You do what you want with it. That's not to say there shouldn't be disclaimers on them saying that they can mess your day up (like on cigarettes). There should be similar laws for it though, like driving while intoxicated. It's the same thing, just a different substance.

How would throwing those people in prison benefit anyone?

You're right in the fact that tobacco and alcohol being legal makes for a hypocritical failing system. People will mess themselves up on whatever legal or not and prison does not help the problem. At all.
