My great-uncle referred to me as a "tall drink o' water." To this day I have no idea what it means.

Maybe he was being literal. Humans are made of like 70% water or something.

My grandma is a Jehovah's Witness, I don't think anything she says was ever amusing, wise, or relevant.

Today I was talking to my grandmother about my fuckup younger brother who had stolen forty dollars from her and she said, "He would steal the quarters off a dead man's eyes" and I had to kind of smile because that's an awesome saying.

They used to put quarters over the eyes of dead people back in the day. Can't remember which culture or time period but I remember hearing about it or reading about it somewhere..

It is a very old tradition to put coins over dead people's eyes, in their mouth, or in their pockets. I think it dates at least as far back as Ancient Greece, where the dead had to cross the Styx river in order to enter the underworld. The deceased would give the coins to Caron, who manned the boat that would get them across this river. If they didn't have a coin, they would be stuck on the wrong side of the water.

If I'm not mistaken, it's attributed to Assyrian burial customs that the Greeks adopted, but I could be wrong. Also, it's Charon or Kharon, typically.

That is awesome dude. I forgot how much I loved reading about ancient Greek mythology. That stuff has interesting stories for days.

I am trying to think of some, while my grandmother goes to the "ice box" to get a "tomato pie". ...I'm sure I'll think of several, though.

Every time someone asks my grandma when something will happen, she responds with "by and by." My grandmother is a very chill lady.

I've got an interesting family, but here are the top 3 that I can think of at the moment.

  • My great grandmother on nudity: "If they haven't seen it before they won't know what it is, and if they have it's nothing new."
  • My steps mom's dad: "Jumped up, gerry-eyed Jeeesus CHRIST!" His favorite curse. Not sure why I always loved that one, but it's just got such a ring to it.
  • My embittered father after his first divorce: "If it flies, floats or fucks rent it, it's cheaper." As a divorced man who has spent the majority of his life dealing with boats, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, I find this increasingly hard to refute.
