Depending on your internet situation you could run apache or something.

I'm paying out the ass for the best internet I'm able to get in my area, all of 5/60 up/down. I'd love to try something like that though, what can I use it for? I'm still somewhat new to this, and plex/samba had nice easy top read guides and all that jazz so while I'm experienced I wouldn't say I know everything!

That sucks, I think I pay $65 for 20/100mbps. Anyway I digress, Apache is a web server. If you're on cable you can host your own webpages, though with a connection like that I'd keep it pretty basic if I did it at all.

This list gave me a lot of ideas, may do the same for you?

An OpenVPN server comes in handy if you have to join insecure WLANs or want to access your files remotely. If you want private conversations then email, jabber and VoIP. If you use multiple devices maybe a wiki for notes.
