The best way is to get into orbit, then burn retrograde relative to the moon's orbit around kerbin when you are also going that direction. It's easier to escape when you start out in a prograde orbit btw.

I don't know about that: the Mun's sphere of influence should be the same. Also prograde to Kerbin means more delta-v to return unless you can maneuver a second pass by the mun for a gravity brake.

You don't necessarily want to shoot straight out of the trailing side. Get into a low orbit around mun and from there you will see that some escape trajectories will bring you into an orbit that crosses kerbin's atmosphere high/low enough to aerobrake. Or close enough to it that even monopropellant can adjust your orbit down a bit.
