It's easier to escape when you start out in a prograde (to Kerbin) orbit
I don't know about that: the Mun's sphere of influence should be the same. Also prograde to Kerbin means more delta-v to return unless you can maneuver a second pass by the mun for a gravity brake.

You don't necessarily want to shoot straight out of the trailing side. Get into a low orbit around mun and from there you will see that some escape trajectories will bring you into an orbit that crosses kerbin's atmosphere high/low enough to aerobrake. Or close enough to it that even monopropellant can adjust your orbit down a bit.
