LOL. I'm so cynical, I think you are on to something. They cheated Ron Paul. They aren't above changing the rules on a whim. Strange then that they didn't invent some obscure clause to bar Trump from debates or primary voting.

Maybe the Republicans had been briefed on Hillary's "Pied Piper" strategy: never in a million years would people elect Orange Man Bad when they could instead have the honor of shattering the glass ceiling and achieve virtue-signalling nirvana.

No. I think the Republicans went to no great lengths to rig their primaries because they thought they didn’t need to. Really doing so requires a great amount of prior planning (the Clintons spent 16 years working on it). From the establishment Republican viewpoint, Jeb or Rubio was almost sure sure to be the nominee, either of whom would fit right into their comfort zone. So why bother? In their thinking Cruz was the biggest danger and he was an outlier, but probably not a disaster even if he pulled off an upset.
