is it worth the switch?

Sweet Baby Jesus YES! I created my account here about 5 weeks ago, deleted my reddit account the very next day, and have never looked back. There have been connectivity hiccups due to the massive influx and DDOS attacks, but the advantages of a vastly superior community and admins that aren't dicks outweigh any technological disadvantages.

Interesting, I will definitely be trying it out! I just wish there was a mobile app. That would be nice

The mobile website IMO is very usable. The only downside is you don't get inbox notifications, but for me that's far from a dealbreaker.

This place may have a smaller community but the comments are usually more engaging. Since I've been here I've had a bunch of nice discussions, instead of everything being so meme based all the time.

It's a nice place to hang.

I love it. The community here is much smaller and that is one of the biggest perks, as far as I am concerned. I actually recognize usernames and get a feel for contributors here which is something that did not really happen much over on Reddit. The catch 22 is that fewer people=less new content but all in all, I do prefer voat.

Less quantity, more quality. Little to no censorship, visible bans, etc. It's basically what Reddit was supposed to be.

I was relatively new to reddit as a member, i didnt even lurk much. I started going regularly over the past 3 months or so. That's were i learned about Voat. Within hours of creating my Voat account and lurking a bit, I felt comfortable enough to start submitting content, asking questions, and generally being an active member.

things i like about Voat versus reddit:

  • The community at Voat seems to be way nicer and more intellectual
  • Very little intimidation on being an active member
  • Comments are actually far more enjoyable in my opinion. Everything is not one giant inside joke or circlejerk
  • Overall better tone and feel than the other place

Its up to you, however, i like it here.. and will be sticking around! Welcome to Voat!!

You use the term intellectual loosely :p

Hey now, comparatively speaking :) ... I dont feel the need to shower after hanging out in most of Voats subverses. Spend an hour or two on most subreddits, and even my Dog who eats Kitty litter looks at me with this shameful, judgmental eyes!

Hi! Welcome to Voat, I hope you really enjoy it here. I was only on Reddit for a couple months and I didn't understand how it worked, so I can't comment on the differences in that respect. However, I think for me I see two main differences that encouraged me to switch from Reddit to exclusively using Voat.

  1. The people on Voat have seemed to be much more friendly and open and inviting then Reddit. This might be due to the fact that Voat is still much smaller, but either way it's been a contributing factor for me.
  2. Also, I like the way Voat has set up upvoats and downvoats and that you have to earn them & that they actively encourage user participation through CCP. Since I was really only a lurker on Reddit, this was a big change for me, and so far I'm really enjoying it and it has been incredibly beneficial.

The only major drawbacks that I've run into is that there's less content on Voat since it's still smaller then Reddit, but that is quickly changes and I'm seeing less issues with it now.

As others have mentioned, the comments are usually more informative and engaging.

One thing that I have enjoyed, is not having to scroll down to avoid the stupid pun threads that usually make it to the top of every post.
