The gold fringe applied to Old Glory is specific to military organizations. Old Glory is displayed in accordance with the US Flag Code (viz. US Codes). The US Flag Code codifies how Old Glory may be displayed, etc. You will see the gold fringe (useage which dates from the early 1800's) on military regimental flags, the presidential display, etc. I refer here to the correct name for the Flag of the USA: "Old Glory" -- the proper name for our National Emblem. I bled for our Republic and have two Purple Hearts to prove it, so if someone disrespects Old Glory, I will kill him or her. Ipso facto, Q.E.D.
