True, but I have to advocate for my skinny, diabetic son. And for myself, since I don't want anyone thinking I "gave" him diabetes (other than my shitty genes).
Type 1 diabetes is usually caused by an autoimmune disorder. Having it somewhere in the family means that you're at a slightly higher risk than the general public, but not by much. Doctors still don't know the inheritance pattern for it or what genes are responsible. They still haven't even figured out how autoimmune disorders work. (I've studied immunology and genetics. It's an absolute nightmare.) Even with a full set of genes that put someone at a higher risk, there's still no guarantee they'll get type 1 diabetes, and at the same time there are people without the genes that will still develop it.
The only thing for certain is that type 1 isn't the individual's fault. That one just kind of happens.
Oh man. I used to work with this huge fat lady. She has the Beetus. She INSISTS it's Type 1 though, even though she only acquired it like a year ago... I kept telling her that it was impossible, she had to be type 2. Bitch was constantly eating and I would say took 4-6 shots in an 8 hour period. It blew my mind. Please tell me I'm right and that she's a filthy fucking liar who won't admit she gave it to herself from being a greedy eatbeast.

My aunt had it, my brother had it, and now my son does. There's definitely a trend in my family. :)
