I like gambling on sports (such as football or pancratium) more than gambling on mechanised random-number generators (such as video lottery terminals or roulette wheels), because I feel like it's more controllable, like a game of skill rather than a game of luck.
You can reasonably predict who is going to win a sports competition based on measurable values like {size, strength, stamina, win/loss record, speed, etc}. But when you play a random game of "wait for your number to appear", you are completely at the whim of Eris.
I like card games and dice games more than spinning wheel games for the same reason: there's a bit of influence on the outcome based on the players' strategies. There are ways to influence spinning wheel games, but you need to be the house to do it, so it's unfair.

I don't know why people would gamble on games that are rigged, but then again, slot machines...

Anecdotal your evidence is, but I would tend to agree that a large majority who still watch also have money in it. Others still watch for entertaininment, usually those who manage to not let the politics that seeped in from ruining it for them.
