Yeesh... I ditched Slashdot and went to HN. Hmmm... Have you tried the voat of Slashdot? Soylent News. Good people.
I still recommend HN but only with the caveat that you have to self filter a ton of VC and business bull crap. Still... The people on there are scary smart and really do know what's going on.

Be sure to cross post to the programming and sysadmin subverses here, too. I would try out the programming subverses here and maybe even dabble in the beginning programming section of that's your area. Could really turn into a thing.
Edit: if you're working in the bay area in the fields, then you pretty much need to be on HN. Come back here often, too!
