I doubt this is any different from hitting the remove button as OP did, but it saves one from sifting through the list of subverses in search of whatever subverse from which they want to unsubscribe.
I suspect the subverse remaining in the topbar for OP might have been cache? OP says the method worked the second time he tried it, but that just might have been cache catching up? At any rate he has successfully unsubscribed from the subverse, it seems.

I can't really see any way to access that page anywhere.Edit: yeah that is the same subverse edit page I tried earlier, but now it seems to work… Strange.
