McSally's problem was that she was forced to shift to the right to win the support of voters in the Republican primary against Arpaio and Ward, and this made her too conservative for the general electorate. Minorities make up one third of the AZ population and many suburban voters are independent. Sinema, who notably did not back Ducey, was able to appeal more to this wider range of voters, without needing any fuckery.
