You both have half the truth. Nazi was meant to be derogatory, and part of the pun was the abbreviation as he described.

The last part of your image is wrong though. The Nazis embraced the term and made it their own. Much like we have with Fake News. They used it all the time, publicly and among each other.

I've heard this too, long ago, from native German speakers- "Nazi" was a stereotypical rural idiot's nickname, like "Bubba" or "Gomer."

NASDAP- the real acronym- doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but I'm pretty sure "Nazi" was not used by, or within earshot of, party officials.

NSDAP was the acronym. But as you point out yourself, that's not very ergonomic. So they appropriated Nazi and made it their own.

They used it in official party literature as well. Even minted a commemorative coin with it. Look up "nazi palestine coin" on an image search. Goebbels himself commissioned that coin IIRC. It was certainly struck for a story in his official party magazine.
