I believe it is critically important. Proper punctuation is how the author conveys nuance and relationship. Structure shows context. Some people will never be able to spell correctly, no matter how they try. Mostly, I overlook spelling errors unless they are on a meme.

Correct grammar, as far as I am concerned, is a reasonable attempt to follow proper rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You can't expect anyone to take you serious if you talk like a thug, hoodrat, high school dropout, etc.
You don't have to be perfect but you need to show that you at least tried.

Poor grammar can make you look stupid to some readers, which detracts from the credibility of what you're saying.

Important to note that depending on audience, good grammar has the same effect.

Naw man. Grammer ain't important worth shit. All it's done for me and you is hold us back intelectually and stuff. If I can just say what i want without all these stupid rules and stuff i could say alot more stuff, know what I'm sayin? The rich people's worried about speaking all proper and shit. We don't need that shit, man. We say what we want, how we want and i don't need some rich person or a teacher to tell me how to talk.
Absolutely! Grammar, as well as punctuation and spelling, is critical in properly conveying your message. While one can easily convey basic information using poor grammar and choppy sentence structure, it is far harder to convey detailed or intricate information without it. Wealthy and educated individuals don't use more sophisticated language to elevate themselves above others. Instead, more sophisticated language is necessary to properly communicate complex ideas that are crucial for their work and lifestyles.

It depends on the level of communication you're hoping to achieve.
For basic things, grammar isn't important. "I hunger apple want" successfully conveys the message accurately.
When establishing a metanarrative, using ennuendo, or nuanced concepts, grammar becomes key. "I agree; the slavery of American blacks was a tragedy, and caused irreparable damage to those nations." This would not correctly convey the secondary meaning without excellent grammar.
Also, spelling, punctuation, and syntax are reliable heuristics for gauging the intellect of your partner, as well as providing a useful shiboleth for yourself to show that you aren't an idiot.

Depends on the context, but for the most part, yes it is.
Proper punctuation makes things easier to read
