Edit: Forty years ago I was knocking around the Far East courtesy of the USMC. One time I called my dad in midmorning and asked him if it was nighttime there. He gave a gasp and a few seconds later sputtered "OF COURSE it's dark here! What did you expect?" I also noticed several constellations in the night sky that couldn't be seen from home. I could go on and on but I've pretty much destroyed your silly fantasies already.

I wouldn't doubt the friend getting them into this being an engineer. the title implies them being smart so others following them and wanting to believe what they say. My experience is don't trust them outside of their specific area and even then some are still morons.
