Everyone's needs for a VPN are a little different, but I've found thatoneprivacysite.net to be a useful tool to compare the choices.

Everyone I know got regular emails from their internet provider about torrenting. Then they used private internet access as their vpn. The letters from the isp stopped. I would trust a vpn to do nothing more than trick tbe isp and give peace of mind over torrenting legalities.

. Its kinda like The Club in that it is easy to defeat, but its even easier to steal a car without The Club.

Only bother with VPNs at all if you need to conceal traffic from your real ISP, *conceal traffic traversing your network or if you want to prevent websites from knowing your real public IP address. Everything else VPN companies try to sell you on is pretty much bullshit. In the end, you're just shifting the realm of trust over to a third party.

You're forgetting security when using an unsecured network.

The ugly truth is there are only two categories of VPNs: those which are known untrustworthy and those which are unknown.

@lemon11 is correct that the only way to know is if you own it.
