The myth started because people misunderstood what the BLS was doing. If I remember correctly, the BLS stated that the median earnings between men and women was different with women on average earning less than men.

Interesting article. Some of the comments below it are absolutely priceless though:

Feminister: I look forward to the time when the jobs preferred by women are high status and earn loads of rewards (titles, money, bonuses, perks, awards, medals, portraits, statues, annual parades), are located where most convenient to women, with hours, time off, starting and ending ages most convenient to women.

Not quite equality then?

i still have a hard time believing that the prime minister of the UK, or the president of the USA, can actually think the wage gap is due to discrimination. they can't be that stupid, surely? are we to assume that they are knowingly trying to mislead us?

Well it is that you guys are distorting what we're talking about here. Like when you call the wage gap a "myth". It's not a myth, it clearly exists. Women make less money. And it is because of systemic sexism. The distortion is where you make it out like a wage gap must be the result of individual conscious discrimination against women in order to be real.

It's political theater. They want to appear to be tackling a problem for women to get more women to vote for them or support their causes. It's pandering politics. Feminists hold a firm leash on the conversation in the media and the best way to get support is to appear to be fighting for their benefit. They know the truth though. The POTUS, Obama, was hit with his "discriminatory" wage numbers and had to resort to avoiding the question or saying that it was different and not discrimination. In general its politics as usual.
