I feel like there are a lot of games that get Kickstarted, launch on early access, establish an iffy reputation there, and then get much better later on.

I've been playing Planetary Annihilation a lot lately, and it's gotten much better since it's incredibly underwhelming 1.0 release.

It got written off, and deservedly so, when Uber decided to launch it's "feature complete" 1.0 version that was missing half of the features it should have. Like saving your damned game! And that other Kickstarter the company immediately launched looked like they were trying to raise funds to either complete their previous game, or they were just abandoning their previous game, leaving it half finished.

I'm really glad they cancelled their second Kickstarter and just focused on making Planetary Annihilation better.

If you want to play Total Annihilation, I think that Zero-k lives up to the legacy much better than Planetary Annihilation.

More customizable command bots. 10 different factories, all well balanced. Smart unit AI that will dodge incoming fire and will move to fight at optimal ranges. More interesting economy system. Deformable terrain (both from terraforming commands and some weapons deform the terrain). Up to 20 person multiplayer (10v10). Multiple game modes. Open source, free, and extensive mod support.

Beyond Good & Evil.

I understand it's not the best game, objectively speaking, but it's certainly one of my favorites, due to fun gameplay, endearing characters, and a simple, yet captivating story -- to top it all off, it has one of the better atmospheres of any console games I've played (at least during those generations).

Too bad that the low sales probably force it to be a cult-hit wonder; Who knows what it could have been if more people had heard about it?

LA Noire. It did a great job of making you feel like you were living in that time and place. I think that people expected GTA, and liked it less for not being that.

It's a game that presents adult material without feeling gratuitous. I really liked how it doesn't pull punches, but just presents you with a (surprisingly) bleak world.

I really liked the game, but damn, it was a pain to install. I got it on disc and the Rockstar Social Club took me about 3 days to get it running.

Shadow Hearts and its sequel, Shadow Hearts: Covenant. It's pretty animu, but the soundtrack and battle system is amazing. The story is very tied down to history (in one game you even hang with Francis Bacon!) starting around WWI. Here's the Wiki for those interested!

The 24 game for PS2. This was a well done licensed game with the whole cast from the show doing their voice acting and motion capture as well as it's own plot telling a unique story from the show. I had plenty of fun playing.

Planescape: Torment !

Just remembered this one. Fantastic game, especially for the time (the graphics don't quite stand up today, but that's not nearly the best part of the game).

The metaphors about morality and various philosophical themes, as well as the poetic symbolism -- these really make the story worth following. To top it off -- there's a bunch of endings. Interesting to save a few hours before the end and go through all the endings based on the choices you make near the end of the game.

Planescape: Torment is a great example of a game that largely lets you play it how you want to play it. It isn't all about combat like some other D&D games from that time. You can even talk your way through the final boss if you want to.

Legend of Grimrock. Both games have been extremely well received and deservedly so, but I feel like it just doesn't get enough attention because of the perception that it's too simplistic, namely the grid movement system.

Shadow of the Colossus

I'm not one of those people who says things like "Everyone should play this game!" but if there are games that everyone should play then Shadow of the Colossus is one of them.
