I didn't play a single minute of multiplayer and I absolutely loved the game to the tune of 28 hours played.

+1 from me. The only problem is, that if you have no friends who are interested, you may have a difficult time doing it solo.

It's hard as shit at first, but once you unlock more items with some basic achievements it becomes doable.

No joke, that game consumed my life for a while. So much so that I started making a card game in Tabletop Simulator based off of RoR. It's a ton of work and I love it, but I'll be happy when it's over.
For a similar sort of patience + skill = reward sort of experience, you should definitely look into Vagante. Still early access but it's killing in ratings right now. I think it's gonna do well.
