The firmament is made of glass, but it's not a dome over a flat earth pizza. We live INSIDE the spherical Earth and there are concentric spherical layers of glass in the sky which is in the middle of Earth. The closest layer of glass is at 100km altitude, and it has a thick layer of ice attached to it. That is where megacryometeors (huge falling chunks of ice) come from.
