The short answer is installment plans. They get a 2 year more or less interest free contract from their carrier. So for about $1 / day (sounds cheap right?) they get the latest phone. Demonstrably they haven't the foggiest idea what to do with the device. But it feeds their group identity need. AND should they stumble upon some actual need the phone will do whatever is asked of it.
Would a $300 phone be good enough? Sure. A $30 phone would be good enough. But being a laissez faire capitalist I support their sovereign right to made poor economic choices. And in the end a $1200 iPhone Xs Plus won't kill you like $1200 worth of cigarettes.
I cant rationally explain why people give a shit about the choices others make in purchasing their electronic devices. Does everbody need to make the same decisions you do, commie faggot?

Don't forget the fact that a $1200 phone costs you $2400 when you get if for "free".

This is debatable, since there are still no irrefutable proofs.
