The stock market surged because Trump was elected and he turned the economy around. He restored faith and everyone made a lot of money. At the moment, there is doubt if the Reps can hold the House and Senate in the election. Without the House and the Senate, Trumps hands are tied and the economic recovery will be harmed, maybe even negatively effected. Hence the sell-off. Traders won't wait for election results, they sell now while the price is high but this causes a drop. Then if their fears come to nothing and the Reps manage to hold their majority, the traders re-buy at a lower price, making billions and the bull run continues.
