Remember when free speech was considered courageous? Remember when the sticking up for free expression, even for those you despised, was a virtue?

It's a generational change that makes me feel damn old.

I think because young adults now grew up being told that anything controversial or at risk of hurting feelings is "wrong", whereas most older people were told "get over it" if our feelings were hurt.

It's not their fault. Schools were the first places made "safe spaces". They've never known an environment where they had to stand up for something with their fists. My son hears the stories my parents tell about me in school in the seventies and eighties and he can't quite comprehend them.

Only natural they're not comfortable with people who might challenge their view points.

You nailed it. It's a generation where there was outrage if someone's kid didn't make the cut for sports team regardless of how bad they were, and every single kid got a trophy just because it made them feel bad if they didn't; Where kids could cry about getting a bad grade or their parents could complain to the school and the grade might get bumped up; where my own nephew's entire school (4th grade mind you) was not allowed to celebrate Halloween by dressing up and expressing themselves because some kid's parents complained to the school that such activities were offensive to their culture/religious beliefs; where helicopter parents have coddled their kids to the point that they can't function as adults due to criticism or harsh-realities. I blame the parents, the teachers, and the lawyers. I bring in the last group there because in many ways they've helped fuel this arena of fear whereby no one wants to risk taking a stand anymore for fear of the almighty lawsuit coming down on them. It's a sad reality. I don't deny that bullying exists, and I've seen some stories of it that are terrible (the equivalent of the hive-mind attacking people in real life) but there's also a point where kids need to face their problems and learn to cope with some shit in life.

So much deceit is hidden in a company that once cared about the community. Money truly is the route of all evil.

No need to wait that long, we already know they are cowards trying to revise/scrub the history of reddit:

That video went private within the past two days:

If voat's servers react the same way it reacted last "no reddit day/weekend", which was last weekend, we'll have no problem. I'll get a back-up plan anyway though.

What is courageous about mass banning content because it makes you uncomfortable?

These people use 'social language' to get what they want. Rather than thinking in objective terms, they apply vague concepts like 'courage', 'creepy', 'misogyny' to evoke a visceral emotional reaction to override any kind of rational thought or deliberation.

I almost have to respect how efficiently they manipulate people.

Will they have the courage to bend the knee to immense social/financial pressures and do what is being commanded of them by a misguided and overzealous minority? Or will they cave to their principles and maintain their course in the hopes of making a safe haven for free speech, even if it's speech you don't personally like?

George Orwell, eat your heart out.

Once you can make words no longer mean anything, the battle is mostly won.
