Downvotes should be allowed because dislike is a valid response. I hate having my hands tied on Facebook where "likes" are the only button. I found myself wishing there was some kind of mechanism for community curation. If there is no negative feedback, I think people are more likely to post lame or rude stuff.

I really enjoyed the past days with a lot of activity, and little to no downvoats.

Upvoates suffice to separate good posts from bad posts. Downvoates are only used to express disagreement. And that ist not their purpose at all.

I think removing downvoats would be a good thing, however sometimes it feels so satisfying to downvoat a troll...

I hope it's a transitional thing, and those ex-redditors who used to downvote anything and everything they didn't like, will find out that this is a slightly different community, with a more positive vibe.

Although I for one wouldn't miss the downvoat button at all (I don't downvoat out of principle), I don't think changing the way things work because you want to have it your way is the answer.

There will always be some ragers, but I guess they're part of the diversity of the community, and deserve their place.
