Yeah, and you can get around any automod filter by inserting links with no text in the middle of words, like this: [](/#)
Look at the source of this comment, you'll see how it doesn't change the appearance at all but it completely circumvents any kind of keyword matching.
Basically the same idea as inserting blank unicode characters or substituting for visually identical ones, except the reddit spam filter (and a lot of subreddits' automod config) will automatically filter those.

I don't see your comment in that thread when I go to the post on reddit, so they probably didn't actually allow it.
The automoderator config can work based on account age and username, so one of those might have triggered the action in this case. Otherwise it would have been a regex or simple keyword match, but I really don't see how any kind of rule for VPN stuff would apply in this case. They might suck at regexes or something, or maybe they have it set to work based on some weird combination of words that you used (or quoted) which also happen to show up in the VPN spam they get. But whatever the reason, their config doesn't seem right and would likely have a ton of false positives.
