I'm going to be that guy and recommend a different editor. Life is too short to fuck around with vim script and a shit ton of plugins. I've been using textadept, and it's great. Here's why:
It has a curses interface and a graphical interface (gtk irrc).
Keybindings are easy to change, so you can use vim/emacs/whatever style you want.
It's easy to pipe the current buffer or selection to an external program and capture the output.
It's easy to run external commands and capture the output.
All the fancy shit is done with its embedded lua interpreter. Retards can program in lua, so it's easy to add any functionality you require.
That's not an answer to your question, but I wasted hours and hours of my life trying to find an editor that could do what I needed. I tried literally every editor in debian repos. Vim and emacs are obviously capable, but I swear they're both pure shit to use. Best of luck with vim; you've got a long row to hoe.
Edit: Actually, you can check out this link for some vim info. The guy really knows his shit. The rest of his site is worth looking through for general *nix stuff.

Thanks, yeah I’m actually looking for just plain old vi.
I’m actually a lazy windows admin, and my favorite editor to use is nano. I’m unfortunately forced to use vi in some systems as there are no other editors loaded. Old systems that can’t be changed, don’t ask.
This though is worth investigation. I like the features you’ve listed and this sounds very powerful. Definitely going to give it a try. Thank you very much for the advice.
