I don't think it is though. I'd be absolutely amazed if there weren't an inherant mechanism which, when functional, causes people to be attracted to fit, young, opposite sex human beings.
From an evolutionary stand point, this is obviously true. It is most advantageous to the continuation of our species to mate with those types of individuals. There's even a primal preference among males for a specific wasit-hip ratio in women. Unfortunately that particular article doesn't link to the actual studies, which is annoying. I've seen similar, more recent research on it as well though.
