Project Zomboid is actually really good, it's probably the only game that does "zombie survival" well... the only drawback is the game is isometric and just feels low tech, even though it's feature packed. Just be prepared to die often, the game is brutally challenging. To put it in perspective, this is what you see as your game begins. Here's an okay trailer, but only playing the game does it justice.
PS: If you leave the stove on, the house you think is safe from the zombies (it's not) will burn to the ground. I learned the hard way so you don't have to...

It's been in my library for ages. It actually does do zombie survival the best, of any survival games, as far as realism goes. CDDA is just as good, but cranks up the insanity to 11. However, I was more talking about FPS or 3D style things.
I told my brother a while back that if someone was able to perfectly meld Project Zomboid and Dying Light together into a game, it would have all you could possibly ask for in a zombie survival game.

CDDA?
I kind of liked some things about State of Decay, they almost had a good formula going. The squad/base management felt neat. If they could merge that with a Last of Us/Dying Light sort of engine and the soul of Zomboid, I think you'd come out with an awesome but expensive to make game. Only a AAA company could pull it off, and none of them want to invest in making quality games anymore.
Days Gone has some potential.

I hear you on that one... their development time is absurd. I don't know if it will become abandonware before it feels complete, but I worry it will. As-is, it's good, but it needs some sort of storytelling mechanic I feel.
