Certainly the misery and pain and death could be reduced, but the innate violation of the liberty of sentient beings remains - deplorable and inescapable.
Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.
I'm sympathetic to that point of view but not enough to watch other humans die of cancer, heart disease, etc. Maybe we will cross a technological threshold where animal experimentation is no longer necessary. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Decades of torture haven't ended those things, not even remotely.
Slavery is wrong, and we reduce ourselves as a species by allowing might alone to steer us.
