I'd love to agree with you but I think organisms are extremely complex systems and that a handful of lab tests are no substitute for observing the real complicated system.

So I've brought up bioengineering animals without brains so we wouldn't be stuck with these ethical issues. I have another idea though.

What if we introduced a gene that produces the same effect in lab animals? There's still a few problems with a lab animal that feels no pain. You'd still have to kill it. It could also injure itself pretty easily so it might need to wear a muzzle or something. Still I think it's better than the current state of affairs and I think it could be done with contemporary technology.

Certainly the misery and pain and death could be reduced, but the innate violation of the liberty of sentient beings remains - deplorable and inescapable.

Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.
