I'm still uncertain whether this will do more harm than good in the long run.

In the end, it still endorses locking things into the Windows way. Unfortunately, the problem is invisible to end users who just want to play games.

I think that this allows many gamers to finally give up windows. And as less of their shit is win-only, they buy less win-only shit. Until more and more are linux-only, forcing the market to move where the customer wants it to.

Basically it's to help gamers who aren't CS majors to make the switch, slowly weening them off the M$ teet.

MS doesn't even care about windows anymore, it's not their primary focus anymore.

It will likely encourage Windows devs to use Vulkan instead of DirectX. This is a good thing.

I managed to get Skyrim running on a 2015 Chromebook Pixel LS (on Ubuntu in Crouton) and it's almost playable. After I mod the shit out of it, I fully expect it to be a decent experience. I'm gonna redo the whole Crouton installation on external media because I can literally only fit one game at a time, but I'm definitely excited.

Why not just install straight linux on your chromebook? It's a lot less of a headache than crouton.

Can someone redpill me on why I should be running my games on linux?

Well first off, Microsoft is an evil company and Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 are basically spyware. Then there's the inherent benefits of Linux that anyone with the aptitude to operate it would recognize. And of course, if building a gaming PC, Windows is an added expense.

So, is there something I have to do to enable this? My client got some shiny new chat features, but I still only have 1/3 of my library installable on linux. What am I missing?

opt in for beta client, then settings - steam play and choose whether you want tested functional games or your entire library to be able to download.

Yes. Doom VFR is on the initial list put out by Valve and it does work. So do others. Tilt Brush. Beat Saber. Gorn.
