I think it's ok to give traffic to Reddit. Yes they messed up, yes I'm abandoning them pretty much so I can read content thats not been OK'd by the SJW or .gov community but I think it's too far to say lets not give them traffic to see their content...

There's also https://up1.ca/, which is client-side encrypted and supports more than just images. (creators' voat post)

I don't know if Veuwer supports that, but some of Voaters highly discourage Slimgur.

Yes, but they're wrong. We should go with the platform designed for robust free speech instead of the one whose commitment to that hasn't been tested yet.

Do you know why? I mean, i'm not invested in Slimgur in anyway - i'm just curious.

edit: https://voat.co/v/MeanwhileOnReddit/comments/265764/910842 i assume?

It does if you're registered.

Does it really matter, so long as adblock is turned on and you're not buying gold?

I know Imgur was created FOR reddit, but I thought it was separately owned. Why should we avoid it?

They're censorship happy.

Some of reddit's investors have also invested millions of dollars into imgur. They're not independent. When reddit's board makes a decision, they do so with a view to favor imgur and shut out competitors, and vice versa. This is almost certainly what happened with the hard banning (changed to a soft ban, when exposed) of slimgur site-wide.

There's a slimgur ban on Reddit?

Nope, a single VC firm (Andreessen Horowitz) has the main chunk of imgur and a big holding in reddit. reddit also has a direct stake in imgur.

I didn't know that. Thanks.

From what I understand, they are using many of the same censorship policies as reddit.

I don't see why you guys are so obsessed with not giving Reddit traffic... Surely we should all be trying to grow and improve Voat rather than trying to kill Reddit.

It's easy enough to do both at once.

And giving them traffic without clicking on ads or buying gold or making content that gets gilded uses up their resources for free.

Exactly. An alternative doesn't have to be anti.

Or http://veuwer.com/ or https://picgur.org/ or http://postox.com/ or https://voatpic.me/.

All image hosts created for Voat and/or in protest of reddit and imgur.

Thanks for the info, I don't know all the technical stuff people are talking about here and I was using Vuewer until it went down. Used Slimgur and Imgur but not any more now I know about the other choices specifically for Voat

That one scratches a slightly different itch. All images are encrypted client-side and sent to the server that way, so they must be decrypted inline on the site. This effectively means you can't hotlink to images and can't view them inline on Voat. So it's not as easy to use in exchange for some privacy.
