Ignorance is constantly viewed as a bad thing but I believe it plays an important role in society. I mean if we all had the intelligence and power, would we use it for the greater good? From what I've observed (influenced by my environment), we are a social but selfish species. And then there's the possibility of some not being able to handle the truth, who knows what it would do to there mental health.
In order to maintain order, the mass needs to be led by the few. The problem comes when the goals of the few aren't as honorable as one would wish.

Hmmm, interesting view, although I am inclined to ask if you think that the selfishness of our species is merely a product of our conditioning? You know how society seems to be all about 'winning'. Winning in tests, sports, politics, or life in general is the main message we are forced to accept from birth. If you don't win then you're just a loser. This means we get people who justify their selfish ways as part of this such as bullies or politicians who never seem to view themselves as being wrong or mistaken (a sign of weakness) in how they conduct themselves.
I think you could be right about some of us not being able to handle the truth, but I believe it is not up to anyone else to censor this in order to 'protect' others less secure in their minds. If we want a better world I feel we need to include everyone (who wants to join) in the ride, but that we need to have all the factors out in the open in order for people to decide.

Society definitely is a factor, but more so is our biological purpose don't you think? To live and procreate. And in that sense under our current political, economic, etc structures we have to compete. Compete against one another to gain power, show our self worth, gain opportunities and succeed.
In the other aspect, I guess we could enlighten people but only to a certain extent. I mean we have the Internet, full of information and yet some people still choose to be in the dark/closed minded. If we were to open all the doors, people would just end up divided again.
I don't know, maybe I'm being to apathetic with humanity, but giving everyone an equal chance could be dangerous.
