Honestly, I think it was to prevent you from brigading.

Clicking a link and voting is not brigading. Organizing a group of people to all go vote on a link in order to artifically affect the conversation is.

where a bunch of people decide to actively group downvote or send a comment storm at a user/sub/thread.

unfortunately, the best definition is from reddit shudder

"It's when a group of people get together to down vote the same thing, be it a single person, or a group of people representing a dissenting ideology.

A lot of people think it happens as a natural result of specialized subreddits such as /r/SubredditDrama or /r/ShitRedditSays. While the owners/creators/mods of those subreddits may have a stance against vote brigading (even honestly so!) One wonders how it can ever be truly avoided given the nature of those sites (singling out comment threads and users in a negative light).

np.reddit.com combats this. Such subreddits (and others) require that links use "np" instead of "www" which prevents voting and, thus, vote brigading.

TL;DR It's the reddit form of a lynch mob"

Someone linked to this discussion on reddit, and then when I voted on a comment, I got that popup.

If you look, that link is "np.reddit.com" which was set up to avoid vote manipulation/brigading. It's not a new feature or locked thread or anything like that.

As TheKillerRabbit states. This is likely to keep people from sending down vote storms to subs/posts that they don't agree with.

However, It is frustrating as this could be something that you are genuinely interested in and want to leave a remark or opinion on. The only way to do so would be to locate the sub and post manually to make your comment or to vote. This is silly in a number of ways and only serves to decrease the amount of participation in topics that deserve to be discussed.

It also creates a more well guarded "echo chamber" or "Walled garden" where communities are only seeing the exact same opinions reflected back at themselves -- further increasing their belief in their cause and limiting personal thought and progression.

Then again. Reddit no longer believes in being a platform of free speech. No surprise that they would find ways to keep you from expressing that exact thing.

That is what it is for. But it is retarded. Do you really think that people that actually want to do a downvote brigade are going to post np links like the one I had? And do you think those people will not notice it, find the original link, and then downvote the shit out of whatever they wanted to downvote?

It's just a stupid feature that makes using the site really annoying. It doesn't help reduce brigading. It helps piss off regular users.

Oh, I am actually totally agreeing with you. I just find that some (many) people are lazy enough that they are easily persuaded from allowing their voice (voat) to be heard.

Worse yet. There is absolutely a typical sub-group of people that are willing to spend the time/energy to do so (I am likely in this category). They tend to be those that are already technical or political.

I do not agree with their system any more than I agree with voat's "100 posts" or whatever system. Got to use you're voice to have a voice? (sounds like a good idea.. Until you piss off the masses wanting to up/down vote something). I am sure it kills off the bots a bit but it is still a crappy solution to a real problem.

There is no current solution that makes this all work out. I want reddit to stop f****** about and own up to being the "free speech platform" that it thought it was. That is not going to happen. I can only hope that voat will do a better job (for a while). When voat goes the same way... They can expect the same treatment.

Internet users(customers) are not invested in any organization/company and are happy to jump ship at a moments notice. This is nothing new. If you want to see a previous example look at what happened with digg. This created the opportunity for reddit to expand rapidly to become what it is today. We are simply making large clusters of users and shifting them around to organizations that we think are looking out for our interests but ultimately end in screwing everyone over.

This may sound absurd but the only real solution is an p2p system that has no central authority. Even this can be screwed into obscurity with enough effort but at least it would be at its own hands rather than at those of a board of trustees.

Features that restrain speech are going to piss people off. Not only that... But features that allow TRUE FREE SPEECH will piss people off. The world is full of things that many of us find to be upsetting or angering. Not every culture can/should agree with you. This is a fact that will most likely always be a factor in social interactions.

The world is a big place. Get over your shit and try to experience it in the best way you can.

Make things better if you have the opportunity. We owe it to everyone else.

[Edit] Oh. I tried to upvote you too. Apparently I am only allowed 10 every 24 hours until I reach magical number XXXX of "karma" or something? FFS. +1 to you. Even though I am not allowed to give it to you at this time.

I think your anger/frustration is misguided based on your confusion. That popup is part of a feature that's supposed to prevent people from vote brigading. But reddit's evil, so fuck them right?

What confusion? I know it's designed to prevent vote brigading. I just think it is retarded, because it's very ineffective, and it's very irritating.

If people posted a link saying everyone should downvote some asshole, then they sure as hell won't post a np link. And if someone who wanted to downvote just for the sake of joining in on the brigade, then they can easily get to the non np link and downvote.

But if someone link me, who was just browsing Reddit like normal clicks on a link, and starts reading through a thread and voting as normal, suddenly gets warned about being banned for voting, then I'm going to get really pissed off.

You seem be be very confused about what the issue is.

I'm not confused at all. That feature was implemented two serve two purposes. First, someone could post a link to np.reddit.com and not be accused of encourging others to vote brigade. Second, it probably does scare away some users from vote brigading. So in that sense, it's an effective tool considering it's not even an official reddit feature.

If you click on a post that directs you to a post within another subreddit, you have no business voting within that subreddit whatsoever. You don't go into your neighbor's house and tell him how to live his life, just because you live next door to him.

If you're going to call the feature "retarded" then why don't you learn programming and write the code that prevents vote brigading?

Are you using an extension? Do you have beta enabled?

This looks new to me, np was an unofficial hack.

It's been around for some time. SRS and other brigading/circlejerk subs usually link with np, and RES will warn you in case you didn't realise it.

I was using RES at the time. No I don't have beta enabled.

This is also the first time I have seen it.

Ah ok I think it's a RES feature. I've heard it mentioned before. I never used RES myself.

This is not a reddit feature. It's an RES feature.

The popup maybe, but I don't think RES hosts np.reddit.com.

The "np" subdomain is meaningless without RES. It's a feature that involves rationalization. NP stands for Nepal.
