I dont understand how they could possibly think it's a good idea to ban people for a downvote...wtf are they thinking?

Do you not see the problem in going into another subreddit where you've never been before and start downvoting things you don't like because someone sent you there?

To be clear, that message pops up every time you vote on any comment. Up or down.
Edit: I mean it happens every time I voted, while I was in the thread that I linked.

False. That message only pops up if you're viewing pages on np.reddit.com which is supposed to prevent people from vote brigading. I don't think you fully understand what's going on here lol.
you're getting it because you followed a link to a thread from someone's comment in another subreddit... if you landed on that thread on your own, you shouldn't get the NP warning. correct? i get why that can be infuriating especially if you were thinking for yourself and not brigading, but i think, since reddit has so much bs, it is a good thing overall.

The NP links for reddit were an attempt to try to lessen brigading and help people avoid being banned for just visiting links to other threads.
Take it as you will that they want to discourage participation in threads from people outside of given subreddits.

This is the biggest take away from reddit. You can get banned for regular usage just because you happened to be linked from another subreddit.

np links are a hack created by redditors and used by reddit mods. They are not endorsed by reddit admins.
