They sell it to the people who consider themselves to be young and hip. You can tell by the teen-style rebellious ambiance of the show.
This is one of the methods they use to make naive people feel like they're clever. The sad reality is that they are being patronized by an actor following a script.

It's an old meme. I'd actually disagree with it in part. The show literally does try to misrepresent facts and get people to believe exactly what they want while trying to look non bias.
Take the Hillary Benghazi coverage they did for example. They brushed over the case against her and simply summed it up like it wasn't a big deal - while not covering any of the real reasons people were upset about Benghazi because if you pull out the shady shit that happened any rational person hits instant outrage. But the whole point of the segment was to make Hillary's scandals look insignificant while also making Trump look bad.
They even compared Hillary's scandals to a cookie with a few bad raisens but 'overall it's still good, everyone has some bad stuff' because you know, even the most die hard libshit has to admit Hillary had a decent number of fucking flaws and red flags.

Very interesting observation, although I would argue that all entertainment news shows, including conservative ones use tactics like this.

OK, I quit TV in the early 90s. Really.
But...
If you actually believe that a psychiatrist posts as anonymous on 4chan to share her professional insights, well, frankly, you've been watching too much fucking TV.

Yep. I enjoyed The Daily Show and Colbert well enough under Bush when the criticism was needed, but I started to notice them using their trickery under Obama, and they're right that John Oliver goes way further with it. They've gotten so good at deflecting with mockery that they can't self analyze anymore and it's killing their movement.

Right. It was comedic open season on Obama, just ask the clown (rodeo). Remember when John Stewart criticized Obama? As I recall he backpedaled on it real quick.

You are thinking that everyone agrees that John Oliver is awesome. I find him to be grating. I can't watch him for more than a minute.
