I like Voat, but objectively it can't compete just yet. Even today alone, it had to undergo maintenance, and that hurts. Each time there was a surge from Reddit, Voat's servers simply died, and that also hurt its momentum. With that said, Voat is growing at a blazing pace, and will be there when Reddit inevitably screws up, which it will.

The even bigger issue I see.
Voat is a crazy circle jerk right now over how much "Reddit sucks".
If it wants to go Anywhere, I need to come here and see funny/interesting stuff, not "LOL down with Reddit Long Live Goat Voat."

Well, reddit administration didn't completely eliminate comments like Digg did with v4, so they have that going for them, which is nice.
But powermods can (and do) block problematic users from thousands of subreddits at a time. The difference between that and completely eliminating comments is negligible.
In short, the problem is powermods and the entire stack of vulnerabilities that enables their entryism and continued operation.
They have to go or reddit has to burn. There is no third option.

The media doesn't get just how much pent up frustration there is among redditors as it related to the powermods. Not even the top brass at reddit seems to get it; so it's not surprising that they wouldn't either.
This revolt only got any attention at all due to the fact that the power mods do have so much power.
Enough power to make the admins bend over and take it just like they do to the user base on a daily basis.
It's not over yet.

Yea it's kind of frustrating reading so many articles that completely miss the point. Reddit is a shell of its former self and far from business as usual. Also, the point on no alternatives was amusing.

Rome will never fall. Egipt will never fall. Babylon will never fall. Cartagen will never fall. We saw this before and it doesn't matter how big, reddit will fall and that would be a good day
