Serious question: is pirating games and/or movies immoral?

If you want that particular part of the economy to function and thrive you have to invest money into it. morally speaking if you don't pay, its bad because eventually it will die and then no one gets it.

Buy the game if you want it. With the exception of AAA games, who's producers don't see much when it does well, and lose their jobs if it doesn't. Most devs want to get paid for their hard work. If you hold on to your money because you don't know if you want it or don't know if you are going to like it, then don't pick it up.

If you NEVER want to give money to a certain company for any reason but still want to play their games, pirate. Just don't cry when studio shuts down because they don't break even.

I do get pirating as a demo source (reviews are shit for determining if you want to buy a game). But buy the damn thing if you like it after playing it for a while. And if you finish it you damn sure should pay. Very few exception to that.

If you pirate you are depriving the developers of their rightful compensation for their work, as well as their rights to control their work.

It doesn't matter if it is too expensive, they have the right to ask for outrageous prices. And you in turn have the right not to but it. You do not have the right to take their intellectual property.
Neither does it matter if they are cultural marxists or zealots, or pieces of shit like Ubisoft. Just because you hate them you don't get to steal from them.

Pirating is based on the idea that you deserve things for free, which is not correct.
However, I believe that allowances can be made for the poor. They are still stealing, which is not only directly harmful to the creators but to society. But they aren't depriving the creators of money since they wouldn't have been able to pay. And they are poor, which is really really bad.
Apart from that, it is always immoral. Pirating is not a victimless crime, as you can see in the music industry. Musicians except for the top 0'0001% earn next to nothing, and if it weren't for festivals many would be dying of hunger. As well as not making more songs, which ultimately hurts the consumer and the pirate.

Piracy is a selfish and immoral act which might only be excused by the harshness of poverty.

Developers are contractors. They get compensation up front, maybe in the form of a salary. What they don't see is money from the game sales. And what they don't have is rights to their work. To this day, we do not even know the name of the guy that created Castlevania, for example. Castlevania is owned by a company, not by it's creator. Just like most games since the creation of games. It works similar with game studios. Even if you made a studio, you can still get to do contract work and then not have much say about what you do and what you earn after the game's release. The studio gets paid up front in this case and won't see money from sales. To actually see money from sales, you not only need your own game studio you also need to do everything else yourself. Like selling your game.

If you want to preach at least get your facts straight.

these days it's fine to pirate. 15 years ago games had demos available that actually let you try it out before buying. now it's like a competition to see who can put a more incomplete, buggy mess and still charge $60. if game publishers actually cared about the product I might care about paying.
